Martha Jefferson Starr Hill Health Center
Programs offered by The Martha Jefferson Starr Hill Health Center focus on improving the health of children, teens and families in the City of Charlottesville. Overweight and obesity are particular problems in our community that are risk factors for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, asthma, and certains types of cancer. In an effort to create a healthier community the Center's Nurse Practitioner designs individual, step by step plans while the Hospital's Community Outreach Office, also
located at the Starr Hill Center engages the community. Services are free of charge.
Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle uses over 200 volunteer tutors each year to help adults improve the reading, writing, math, and English speaking skills of approximately 275 adults. Through our one-to-one tutoring sessions and small group lessons, we help our city's residents improve their standard of living by making them eligible for job-training programs and continuing education. Approximately 9000 residents in our community need our services, and the population of adults with a limited English proficiency is growing. Gaining the ability to read, write, and speak English enables our students to become self-sufficient, productive citizens in our community.
Piedmont Family YMCA
Piedmont Virginia Community College
Since January 2013 when the Jefferson School City Center opened to the public, hundreds of PVCC students have taken general education credit classes, such as English, history, math, psychology, information technology, business, religion and sociology, which are offered in PVCC's Jefferson School Center on the first floor of the building. PVCC's space consists of four state-of-the-art classrooms, offices, a 2,500-square-foot commercial-grade teaching kitchen and a 700-square-foot culinary classroom. Opening of the PVCC Jefferson School Center enabled the College to fulfill a goal of launching a new Associate of Applied Science degree in Culinary Arts, starting with the fall 2013 semester. Forty students are currently enrolled in this program of study that prepares them for careers in the foodservice industry. More than 100 students have enrolled in an array of PVCC noncredit cooking classes also offered at this Center. These are taught by chefs and hospitality experts from the Charlottesville area.
